The Ballina Shire Meals on Wheels will receive $15,270 in NSW Government to install solar panels and upgrade their kitchen facilities.

Nationals Parliamentary Secretary for Northern NSW Ben Franklin joined with volunteers of the Meals on Wheels to make the funding announcement today.

Mr Franklin said the funding will assist the Meals on Wheels service with reducing their annual electricity cost.

“The Ballina Shire Meals on Wheels is a vital service for vulnerable members of our community, particularly in providing meals and support for the frail, aged, young people with disabilities and their carers,” Mr Franklin said.

“$11,170 of this funding will allow the Meals On Wheels to install a 7.2KW solar system, which will provide around ten and a half kWh of electricity each year.

“With the solar system in place, the Meals on Wheels will save close to $3,500 for their service. This is a significant saving and means this money can be further invested on those who need this important service.”

Mr Franklin $4,100 will also go towards upgrading kitchen at the Meal on Wheels.

“Providing fresh sandwiches and salads has been an important plan for the Meals on Wheels service with their aim to serve more fresh food,” Mr Franklin said.

“This funding will allow the service to expand their current facilities to provide fresh food options of people using the service.”

Meleta Wood Service Coordinator said “Thank you to Mr Franklin for his continued support for our Service. The funds provided will be a great benefit to the Service allowing us to better support our clients and reducing our carbon footprint.”
