Nationals Parliamentary Secretary for Northern NSW Ben Franklin MLC has commended the NSW Government’s Business Connect service which has helped an award-winning local novelist Jesse Blackadder develop a website and social media profile.

“Social media has become a must for many sole traders, including award-winning novelist from Myocum, Jesse Blackadder,” Mr Franklin said.

“Jesse enlisted the help of the NSW Government’s Business Connect service to help her substantially improve her website and social media presence,” he said.

“Jesse has received numerous awards as a successful author, including the Australian Antarctic Arts Fellowship for 2011-12. Her latest novel, Sixty Seconds, about the family tragedy of a child drowning in a swimming pool, has gained huge interest,” Mr Franklin said.

Creative Plus Business Connect advisor Monica Davidson said she helped Jesse create a new website design and social media presence in time for the release of her new novel.

“Although already a successful and award-winning published author, Jesse wanted to take a more proactive approach to her career and explore other areas such as screenwriting and speaking,” Ms Davidson said.

Jesse said her digital presence is a support tool, rather than a sales tool, but having your own ‘brand’ is increasingly important in the creative industries.

“My advisor has been fantastic in helping me break into screenwriting, a very different industry because the script is only a blueprint for a larger creative process,” Ms Blackadder said.

“Business Connect has been extremely helpful over the past 12 months. I won a grant for a project to get two very experienced screenwriters to adapt Sixty Seconds, which I wouldn’t have been able to do without going through this process,” she said.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Small Business John Barilaro said Business Connect was set up to support people just like Jesse Blackadder.

“We are investing $30 million in Business Connect over four and a half years, with 70 per cent of services to be delivered to local and regional businesses,” Mr Barilaro said.
