Sydney will host the Australian premiere of a new reimagined production of the classic Disney musical, Beauty and The Beast, coming to the Capitol Theatre in June 2023.

The NSW Government, through its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW, has partnered with Disney Theatrical Productions to secure the Australian premiere season of the much-loved story, which will be gloriously and locally produced with spectacular new sets, costume designs, state-of-the-art technology and an Australian cast.

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said Beauty and the Beast would be a major drawcard for Sydney that would provide significant benefits for the NSW visitor economy.

“Sydney is the nation’s home of world-class theatre and we expect this production will draw more than 400,000 musical lovers to the Harbour City during its Australian premiere season,” Mr Perrottet said.

“Bringing blockbuster musicals like Beauty and the Beast to Sydney first is key to turbocharging the NSW visitor economy. This production will generate millions in visitor expenditure, create jobs and position Sydney as the cultural events capital of the Asia Pacific.”

Minister for Tourism Ben Franklin said Sydney’s devoted theatre- goers were in for a treat when the internationally acclaimed production makes its Australian premiere in June 2023.

“Disney’s Beauty and The Beast is an international sensation that has played to more than 35 million people in 13 countries,” Mr Franklin said.

“Sydney is a city of the stage and this reimagining of one of the world’s most beloved musicals will dazzle devotees of the original production, while also captivating a new generation of fans.”

Senior Vice President and Managing Director of The Walt Disney Company in Australia and New Zealand Kylie Watson-Wheeler said the locally produced musical would make a significant contribution to Sydney’s live entertainment offering.

“The Walt Disney Company is thrilled that this new locally produced musical will debut at Sydney’s iconic Capitol Theatre next year. Beauty and the Beast is a much-loved classic that will fill the hearts of a new generation, in a whole new way,” Ms Watson-Wheeler said.

“Staging this glorious production will make an important contribution to the return of a vibrant and thriving live entertainment scene in Sydney and we thank President and Producer of Disney Theatrical Productions, Thomas Schumacher, for his ongoing commitment to this region as well as the NSW Government and Destination NSW for their support.”
